16、CTORGENERAL Growingstronger asanassociation andanindustry stheCOVID-19pandemicreceded,theworldrapidlyreconnectedusingairtravel.Throughout 2022,countries progressivelyeasedorendedtravelrestrictions,withChinabeingthelastmajormarkettodoso.Thedesireofpeopletoresumetravelhasbeentrulyimpressive,withtravel

17、ernumbersreboundingfurtherwitheverynewborderopening.Globally,passengerdemandisnotexpectedtofullyreturntopre-COVID-19levelsuntil2024.butrapidprogresswasalreadyclearlyevidentas2022closed Aircargosperformancetookadifferentroute.ThesectorwasaW=eWa-Sh-D-recsrGene05A ATAAnnUal lifelineduringthevOVID-19cri

18、sis.Atitspeakin202、/OlIJrneSandrevenuesweretracingabovepre-pandemiclevels,conomicuncertaintiesandgovernmentmeasurestotameinflationMavetakentheirtoll.Withglobaltrjefalling,aircargovolumesslippeHbelow2019levels.Nonetheless,、revenueshavestayedstrong.Aircargoscontributiontoairlinerevenuesin2022was17%oft

19、otalrevenues,considerablyhigherthanthe12%in2019.transitionandupholdingtheinteg?lofCORSIA.Todate,howeveCMehavenotseengovernments(Qyidingsufficientproductionincentivcaojpupthesupplyofsustainableaviationfuels(SAF).Andmanygovernments,includingseveralinEurope,arecontemplatingplacingadditional*fancialburd

20、ensonaviationinthenam*q(utheenvironmentthatwillunderminQISAandreducetheindustry,sfinarcaPeeHy investinsustainabilityefforts.Afteracumulativelossofover$180billionoverthe2020-2022period,theairlineindustryisontracktopostacollectiveprofitin2023.Theindustryperformedwellonkeychallengesin2022.Sustainabilit

21、y:TheadoptionoftheLong-TermAspirationalGoalatthe41s,AssemblyoftheInternationalCivilAviationOrganization(ICAO),alignedgovernmentswiththeindustryscommitmenttoachievenetzerocarbonemissionsby2050.TheICAOAssemblyalsoresetthebaselinefortheCarbonOffsettingandReductionSchemeforInternationalAviation(CORSIA)t

22、o85%of2019emissions,withthepromisethatitwouldbethesolefinancialmeasureappliedtomanageemissionsfrominternationaloperations.Theindustrynowexpectsgovernmentstodeliverpolicesenablingaviationsenergy Safety:Theindustryssafetyperformancein2022exceeded2021andthefive-yearaverage(2018-2022)onseveralkeymetrics

23、.Akeyindicatorofthisperformanceisthereductioninfatalityrisk,whichwas0.11in2022,belowthefive-yearaverageof0.13.Importantly,theIATAOperationalSafetyAudit(IOSA)remainsavaluabletoolintheindustry*ssafetyefforts.In2022,theperformanceofairlinesontheregistry(measuredbytheaccidentrate)wasfourtimesbetterthanc

24、arriersnotontheregistry.Astheauditmarksits20,hyear,theprogramisbeingrenewedwitharisk-basedfocusthatwillstrengthenitseffectiveness.DiversityandInclusion:IATAsflagship25by2025initiativetoimprovegenderbalanceinaviationhasgrowntoinclude176signatories.Themostremarkablegainreportedbythesignatories “Todate

25、wehavenotseengovernmentsprovidingsufficientproductionincentivestorampupthesupplyofsustainableaviationfuels(SAF).,06 IATAAnnUa-uIATAremainsdedicatedtosupportingtheindustrywiththehigh-performingIATAFinancialSettlementSystems/5 is an increase in technical roles performed by women from 12%in 2021 to 18%

26、in 2022.Across IATA,s membership,the number of female CEOs continues to grow,reaching 28.These developments are a beacon of change for the entire industry.Advocacy:On the advocacy front,there is continuous effort to remind governments of the importance of policies and regulations that enable safe,ef

27、ficient and sustainable operations.Public opinion polling reveals an understanding that aviation is a critical economic contributor(90%),that it provides customers with good value for money(77%),and is a key contributor to the UNs Sustainable Development Goals(82%).Government actions,however,do not

28、reflect this.The Netherlands,for example,is a perfect storm of value-destroying regulatory efforts.IATAjoined forces with other industry stakeholders in a legal action that has temporarily halted the governments plan to slash Schiphol Airport1S capacity by 12%,ostensibly to manage noise impact.The g

29、overnment also tripled its passenger tax to 2 6.4 3.And despite severe operational chaos at Schiphol in 2022,the government is rewarding the airport by allowing it to continue a massive 37%increase in user charges over three years.And to top it off,the government plans to reduce ground handling comp

30、etition.The under-appreciation of aviation is,of course,not limited to the Netherlands.We must remain vigilant in all locations to ensure that airlines are supported by policies that are aligned with global standards and which facilitate our important role in social and economic development the worl

31、d over.Your association IATA remains dedicated to supporting the industry with the high-performing IATA Financial Settlement Systems.In 2022 the IFSS processed$363.3 billion excluding$18.5 billion in refunds.It did so while maintaining extremely high levels of efficiency and security.IATAs own finan

32、ces are strong,and membership is growing.Some 304 carriers spread around the world and covering every business model are counted in the IATA fold.Lastly,I am proud to lead a talented,diverse,and global IATA team that is at your service with reliable products,effective advocacy and critical global st

34、sworstdownturn.Aswehavecontinuedtorebuildglobalconnectivityatgreatpace,wehavebeenaddressingsuchprioritiesasSUStainability,diversity,regulation,operational challenges,and infrastructurecosts.MytenureasChairprimarilyfusedonthreeareas.First,orexternalfocuswasontheindustrysrecoveryafterthepandemic-induc

35、edshutdown.Weemphasizedthesignificanceofreinstatingconnectivitytogovernmentandcollaborationwithindustrypartnerstofacilitateasmoothrestartofmarkets.DespiteencounteringsomechallengesatcertainairportsandwithAirNavigationServiceProviders(ANSPs)Jheindustryasawholesuccessfullyresumedoperations.Send,IATAal

36、somadesignificantprogressinitscommitmenttoachievingnetzerocarbonemissions.Weengagedinsubstantialbehind-the-sceneseffortstooutlinedetailedpathwaystowardreachingnetzero.Additionally,wehelddiscussionswithgovernmentstoadvateforincreasedpolicysupportforsustainableaviationfuels(SAF)Jn2022,theInternational

37、CivilAviationOrganization(ICAO)adoptedaLong-TermAspirationalGoal(LTAG)for2050netzerocarbonemissions,andthismadeaviationaniquesectorwhereboththeindustryandtheregulatingstatesarecommittedtoonetarget.或Q Char Of ATA AnnU 巴 Third,diversityandbroadeningIATA,smembershiphavebeenotherstrongfocusesand2022wasa

38、particularlyimportantyearasweachievedthemilestoneof50%ofIATAmembersjoiningthe25by2025voluntaryinitiative.Thiswilldriveamorediverseandinclusiveaviationindustryparticularlyregardingfemalerepresentation.Wearewitnessingrealchange.FromahandfuloffemaleairlineCEOsjustafewyearsago,therewere28amongIATAmember

39、airlinesasofMarch2023.Internally,IalsoworkedalongsideWillie,theBoard,andIATAseniormanagementtoensurethatIATAeffectivelyservesitsmembersanddeliversvalue.WeacknowledgeandappreciatethehardworkoftheentireIATAteam,whileatthesametime,seekingopportunitiestofosterinnovation,responsiveness,andastrongeradvoca

40、cyfortheindustrywelove.thevalueofaviation(appreciatedsufficientlybygovernments?Whatcanwedotogetbetterpoliciesforsupportingaviation,ssuccess?Wedoseebroadsupportfortheindustryconsideringtheeconomic,social,andstrategicimportanceofaviation.However,therearecertainlyareasinwhichwewouldliketoseebetterpolic

41、iesinplacetosupportaviationssuccess,especiallyasweneedtoworkeverclosertodevelopamoresustainableindustry.Aswellastheneedtoexpandinvestmentinefficientinfrastructureandairtrafficmanagementsystems,itsessentialthatgovernmentsdevelopamoreunifiedglobalregulatoryframeworkandfairtaxationsystem.Indeed,thepand

42、emicperiodbroughtthisneedfurtherintothespotlight.Whenitcomestooperationalefficiencies,itiscrucialforgovernmentstoplaytheirpart.TheSingleEuropeanSky(SES)initiative,whichcouldreduceEuropesairtransportemissionsupto10%usingexistingtechnology,hasnotbeeneffectivelyimplemented.Furthermore,billionsinEuropea

43、nenvironmenttaxeshavenotcontributedtoSES,SAFusage,oremissionreductions.Thesetaxessimplymakeflyingmoreexpensivewithoutenhancingaviationefficiencyoraddressingenvironmentalconcerns.Incontrast,airlineshaveshowncommitmentbyinvesting$17billioninforwardpurchaseSAFagreementsin2022alone.Regardlessofprice,air

44、lineshaveutilizedallavailableSAF.Encouragingly,thedemandfromairlinespromptedasignificantincreaseinSAFproductionin2022withtheprospectofreaching30billionlitersofSAFin2030.Althoughthereisundeniablemomentum,thereisstillworktobedone,andgovernmentpolicieswillplayacrucialroleinshapingthefutureofsustainable

45、aviation.FuelisthegreatestchallengeinourpathtowarddecarbonizingaviationasSAFremainlimitedinavailabilityandsignificantlymoreexpensivethanConventionaljetfuel.GovernmentsshouldassessthesignificanceoflocallyproducingSAF,offerincentivestoboostproduction,ensureaffordabilityandencourageadoptionforairlines.

46、Theseactionswillbeincrementalinmovingtowardsournetzerotarget.Whatdoyouseeastheimmediateandlonger-termchallengesfacingairlineleaders?Aviationleadersfacemanychallenges.Intheshortterm,wehaveavarietyofeconomicchallenges,especiallytheglobalinflationarypressures.Geopoliticalcrisescontinuetoaffecttheworld,

47、destabilizingglobalizationandthreateningglobalsupplychains.Theairlineindustryishavingtofixbalancesheetscarryingdebtsof$650billion,requiringstrategicmeasurestostabilizeandstrengthenfinancialpositions.Q*Diversity and broadening IATA5s membership have been other strong focuses and 2022 was a particular

48、ly important year.”09 Inthelongerterm,thepathtorealizethecommitmenttonetzerocarbonemissionsalsocomeswithitschallenges,togetherwiththepaceofdigitaltransformation,andregulatorychallengestoensureairlinesremaincompetitiveandresilientintheevolvingaviationindustry.Buttherescertainlyroomforoptimism,particu

49、larlywhenweseehowstrongthepaceofrecoveryhasbeenfromaviationsworstdownturninlivingmemory.Whatroledidaviationplayintheaftermathofthe tragicearthquakethathitpartsOfTiirkiyeandSyriaearlierthisyearandwhatdidyoulearnfrombeingonthefrontline?Airlinesplayavitalroleduringnaturaldisastersbyprovidingtransport,f

50、acilitatingevacuationandrescueefforts,anddeliveringaid.Withtheirflightnetworksandfleet,theycanquicklydeployresources,assistinginthepromptdeliveryofaidtotheimpactedregions.Weareexperiencingchallengingtimesasacountry.Thepainwefeltintheaftermathoftheearthquakecatastropheon6February2023isstillfresh.Iwou
