13、forpeopleofCoIorZincludingNativeAmericansandSpanish-speakingimmigrants.Sheoftenspokeaboutculturalandsocialissues.Shirleychisholm:IncreasingimmigrationtotheUnitedStatessuggeststhatwedoface(andwebetterownupto?wedoface)newsocialandculturalproblemsasthesenewAmericansareintegratedintooursociety.Andbecaus

15、Innineteenseventy-twoShirleyChisholmannouncedthatshewouldrunforpresidentoftheUnitedStates.Manypeoplethoughtitwasastrangethingtodo.MizChisholmsaidduringherlifeinpoliticsshefacedmorediscriminationasawomanthanasablackperson.ShirleyChisholmbecamethefirstwomanandthefirstblackpersontocarryoutapresidential

16、campaignwithinoneofthemajorparties.WhensheannouncedhercandidacyfortheDemocraticPartynominationforpresidentthisiswhatshesaid:IamnotthecandidateofblackAmerica,althoughIamblackandproud.Iamnotthecandidateofthewomensmovementofthiscountry,althoughIamawomanandIamequallyproudofthat.Iamnotthecandidateofanypo

17、liticalbossesorspecialinterests.Iamthecandidateofthepeople.MizChisholmdidnotwintheDemocraticprimariesorthenomination.Shesaidshedidnotrunforpresidentbecausesheexpectedtowin.Sherantomakeapoint.Innineteenseventy-threeShirleyChisholmwroteanotherbook,TheGoodFight.Inthatbookshetoldofherreasonsforrunningfo
