6、pointtoproduce,viagravity,aforcethatpushesthebittothelowsideofthehole.TheeffectofthependulumvarieswiththelengthoftheBHAbelowthetangentpoint.Thefundamentalpendulumassemblyincreasestherestoringforcebyincreasingthependulumlengthwithastabiliserintheproperposition.Whenthedrillstringisloweredintotheboreho

7、le,thetotallengthofthedrillstringisundertensionduetoitsownweightwhichispartlycounterbalancedbythebuoyancy.Todrillawell,therockbeneaththebithastobedestroyed.Partofthisdestructionforceisobtainedbyacertainamountofweightonbit(WOB)whichforcesthebitagainsttherock.Thereforeduringdrilling,thelowerpartofthed

8、rillstringissetundercompression,leavingtheupperpartofitstillundertension.Whendrillingverticalwells,standardpracticeistoavoidputtingordinarydrillpipeintocompression(recommendedbyLubinskiin1950).Thisisachievedbymakingsurethatthetbuoyedweighf,ofthedrillcollarsandHWDPexceedthemaximumWOB.Thebuoyedweighto

9、fthedrillcollarsistheamountofweightthatmustbesupportedbythederrickwhencollarsareruninthehole.Thisloadisalwayslessthanthein-airweightifmudisusedinthewell.Thehighertheweightonbit,themoretheassemblywillbend.Thiscanmovethetangentpointnearertothebitandhenceisdetrimentaltotheeffectivenessoftheassembly.Fur

10、thermore,thesideforceatthebit,producedbytheweightonbit,actsagainstthependulumforce.Weightonbitaslowaspossibleisdesirableforapendulumassembly.WOBdataareavailableforeachtypeofbitsfromthiswell,wecandeterminetheweightofBHAminimuminairusingtheformulabelow.Requiredair weight of BHA9.1MaximumWOBxsafetyfact

11、orbuoyancyfactorxcoswherethesafety factor = 1 +percentagesafety margin1009.2andTheBF(buoyancyfactor),assumingthatthedrillstringisnotloweredempty(PSteel=655ppg),canbecomputedas:BF=(I-)9.3Psteel/Thenormaldrillstringdesignpracticeaimistoavoidabruptchangesincomponentcrosssectionalareas.Abruptchangescanl

15、tralpointisdefinedaspointalongthedrillstringwhereitisdividedintotwoparts,anupperpart,beingsuspendedfromtheelevatorsandwhichisundertensionaswellasalowerpartthatgeneratestheappropriateWOBandisundercompression.Sincethecollarsareundercompression,theywilltendtobendundertheappliedload.Theamountofbendingwi

16、lldependonthematerialandthedimensionsofthecollar.Theshapeofthedrillcollarmayhaveacircularorsquarecrosssection.Astringofsquarecollarsprovidesgoodrigidityandwearresistance,butitisexpensive,hashighmaintenancecostsforcertainconditionsandmaybecomestuckinkey-seateddog-leg.Typically,standardandspiraldrillc
