3、hanscientificones,andthatweusuallydon,tgetanywherewhenwedothinkaboutthem.Ibelievethatascientistlookingatnonscientificproblemsisjustasdumbasthenextguy-andwhenhetalksaboutanonscientificmatter;hesoundsasnaiveasanyoneuntrainedinthematter.Sincethequestionofthevalueofscienceisnotascientificsubject,thistal
4、kisdedicatedtoprovingmypoint-byexample.Thefirstwayinwhichscienceisofvalueisfamiliartoeveryone.Itisthatscientificknowledgeenablesustodoallkindsofthingsandtomakeallkindsofthings.Ofcourseifwemakegoodthings,itisnotonlytothecreditofscience;itisalsotothecreditofthemoralchoicewhichledustogoodwork.Scientifi
5、cknowledgeisanenablingpowertodoeithergoodorbad-butitdoesnotcarryinstructionsonhowtouseit.Suchpowerhasevidentvalue-eventhoughthepowermaybenegatedbywhatonedoeswithit.IlearnedawayofexpressingthiscommonhumanproblemonatriptoHonolulu.InaBuddhisttemplethere,themaninchargeexplainedalittlebitabouttheBuddhist

8、causeitcanproducesomething.Anothervalueofscienceisthefuncalledintellectualenjoymentwhichsomepeoplegetfromreadingandlearningandthinkingaboutit,andwhichothersgetfromworkinginit.Thisisanimportantpoint,onewhichisnotconsideredenoughbythosewhotellusitisoursocialresponsibilitytoreflectontheimpactofscienceo
9、nsocietyIsthismerepersonalenjoymentofvaluetosocietyasawhole?No!Butitisalsoaresponsibilitytoconsidertheaimofsocietyitself.Isittoarrangematterssothatpeoplecanenjoythings?Ifso,thentheenjoymentofscienceisasimportantasanythingelse.ButIwouldlikenottounderestimatethevalueoftheworldviewwhichistheresultofsci
10、entificeffort.Wehavebeenledtoimagineallsortsofthingsinfinitelymoremarvelousthantheimaginingsofpoetsanddreamersofthepast.Itshowsthattheimaginationofnatureisfar;fargreaterthantheimaginationofman.Forinstance,howmuchmoreremarkableitisforusalltobestuck-halfofusupsidedown-byamysteriousattractiontoaspinnin
11、gballthathasbeenswinginginspaceforbillionsofyearsthantobecarriedonthebackofanelephantsupportedonatortoiseswimminginabottomlesssea.IhavethoughtaboutthesethingssomanytimesalonethatIhopeyouwillexcusemeifIremindyouofthistypeofthoughtthatIamsuremanyofyouhavehad,whichnoonecouldeverhavehadinthepastbecausepeoplethendidnthavetheinformationwehaveabouttheworldtoday.
