2、ohadbeensearedintheflamesofwitheringinjustice,itcameasajoyousdaybreaktoendthelongnightofbadcaptivity.butonehundredyearslater,thenegrostillisnotfree,onehundredyearslater,thelifeofthenegroisstillsadlycrippledbythemanaclesofsegregationandthechainsofdiscrimination,onehundredyearslater,thenegrolivesonalo
3、nelyislandofpovertyinthemidstofavastoceanofmaterialprosperity,onehundredyearslater,thenegroisstilllanguishedinthecornersofamericansocietyandfindshimselfanexileinhisownland,sowevecomeheretodaytodramatizeashamefulcondition.inasensewehavecometoournationscapitaltocashacheck,whenthearchitectsofourrepubli
4、cwrotethemagnificentwordsoftheconstitutionandthedeclarationofindependence,theyweresigningapromissorynotetowhicheveryamericanwastofallheir,thisnotewasapromisethatallmen,yes,blackmenaswellaswhitemen,wouldbeguaranteedtheunalienablerightsofIife7liberty,andthepursuitofhappiness.itisobvioustodaythatameric
5、ahasdefaultedonthispromissorynoteinsofarashercitizensofcolorareconcerned,insteadofhonoringthissacredobligation,americahasgiventhenegropeopleabadcheck,acheckwhichhascomebackmarkedinsufficientfunds,butwerefusetobelievethatthebankOfjusticeisbankrupt,werefusetobelievethatthereareinsufficientfundsinthegr
6、eatvaultsofopportunityofthisnation,sowehavecometocashthischeckacheckthatwillgiveusupondemandtherichesoffreedomandthesecurityofjustice,wehavealsocometothishallowedspottoremindamericaofthefierceurgencyofnow.thisisnotimetoengageintheluxuryofcoolingoffortotakethetranquilizingdrugofgradualism,nowisthetim
7、etomakerealthepromisesofdemocracy,nowisthetimetorisefromthedarkanddesolatevalleyofsegregationtothesunlitpathofracialjustice,nowisthetimetoliftournationfromthequicksandsofracialinjusticetothesolidrockofbrotherhood,nowisthetimetomakejusticearealityforallofgodschildren.itwouldbefatalforthenationtooverl
8、ooktheurgencyofthemoment,thisswelteringsummerofthenegro,slegitimatediscontentwillnotpassuntilthereisaninvigoratingautumnoffreedomandequality,nineteensixty-threeisnotanend,butabeginning,thosewhohopethatthenegroneededtoblowoffsteamandwillnowbecontentwillhavearudeawakeningifthenationreturnstobusinessas
9、usual,therewillbeneitherrestnortranquilityinamericauntilthenegroisgrantedhiscitizenshiprights,thewhirlwindsofrevoltwillcontinuetoshakethefoundationsofournationuntilthebrightdayofjusticeemerges.butthereissomethingthatimustsaytomypeoplewhostandonthewarmthresholdwhichleadsintothepalaceofjustice,inthepr
10、ocessofgainingourrightfulplacewemustnotbeguiltyofwrongfuldeeds,letusnotseektosatisfyourthirstforfreedombydrinkingfromthecupofbitternessandhatred.wemustforeverconductourstruggleonthehighplaneofdignityanddiscipline,wemustnotallowourcreativeprotesttodegenerateintophysicalviolence,againandagainwemustris
11、etothemajesticheightsofmeetingphysicalforcewithsoulforce,themarvelousnewmilitancywhichhasengulfedthenegrocommunitymustnotleadustoadistrustofallwhitepeople,formanyofourwhitebrothers,asevidencedbytheirpresenceheretoday,havecometorealizethattheirdestinyistiedupwithourdestiny,theyhavecometorealizethatth
12、eirfreedomisinextricablyboundtoourfreedom,wecannotwalkalone.aswewalk,wemustmakethepledgethatweshallalwaysmarchahead,wecannotturnback,therearethosewhoareaskingthedevoteesofcivilrights,whenwillyoubesatisfied?wecanneverbesatisfiedaslongasthenegroisthevictimoftheunspeakablehorrorsofpolicebrutality,wecan
13、neverbesatisfied,aslongasourbodies,heavywiththefatigueoftravel,cannotgainlodginginthemotelsofthehighwaysandthehotelsofthecities,wecannotbesatisfiedaslongasthenegro,sbasicmobilityisfromasmallerghettotoalargerone.wecanneverbesatisfiedaslongasourchildrenarestrippedoftheirselfhoodandrobbedoftheirdignity
